    Academy of Country Muisic Awards

i%26#39;m going to be in vegas at the same time. i%26#39;m not going to the show but i am going to the red carpet and i%26#39;m getting there early that morning just so i can get a good spot. i know the stars should start showing up about 3 or 4 pm because the red carpet show starts at 4pm. i can%26#39;t wait, i%26#39;m so excited.

wow...maybe I`ll be able to catch a bit of it before I have to head into the arena for the awards.

I believe it is called the ';orange carpet';. Anyways - my first trip for the ACM%26#39;s and very excited. From what I have read over the last few months, we should be able to see some of the orange carpet before going in for the show. I believe we must be in our seats by 4:30pm. I don%26#39;t plan on arriving too early for the carpet - but will stop by and see who I can see. Hope you have a great time!

I can%26#39;t wait either!! My first time going to the awards as well and I%26#39;m not sure what to expect! What does a person wear to the awards?

Good question about what to wear. Also, where should you go on Sunday to go to the Orange carpet area at the MGM? I have a flight out at 7:30pm that night, will it be hard to do that and then catch my flight?

    Thanks!

I%26#39;d like to know where the Orange Carpet is as well...I%26#39;m thinking not at the main doors - does anyone know if there is a site where a person can get this info? the ACMA site provides none.

    Video Poker Bars - Caesars

Does anyone know of a good video poker bar in Caesar%26#39;s? I%26#39;ve only walked through the casino once in the past and can%26#39;t remember seeing any.

    Thanks in advance!

    Video Poker Bars - Caesars

Check right next to the Sports Book for VP Bar....although not full pay. But where are they full pay on the strip unless you find one in High Limit area here and there.

    Video Poker Bars - Caesars

    Thanks, I%26#39;ll check it out!

TR: 4 days at MGM for NON-gamblers on 1st trip

I%26#39;m excited to do my first TR for Vegas!

Hubby and I went Wed. 3/25 - Sat 3/28 to experience Vegas for the first time. We are in our early 30%26#39;s and are not into gambling. As you will see, we found other vices in Sin City to keep us happy!

    Read on!

TR: 4 days at MGM for NON-gamblers on 1st trip

    Anxiously awaiting the TR!!!

TR: 4 days at MGM for NON-gamblers on 1st trip

    Day #1

Ok, so we started in the Queen City and hopped aboard our US Airways flight to SIN CITY! The obsessive planner in me had lists and envelopes coordinated by day and COUPONS! This trip was MUCH anticipated so I was ready! I had researched everything to a T and had the coupons and discounts ready.

After an uneventful flight filled with HS Seniors on their class trip (oy), we arrived! The airport seems to be footsteps from the strip, so we could see the hotels clearly and we were EXCITED! We got off the plane and headed for the baggage claim. It was just 10am in Vegas, so we headed for one of the perks of staying at the MGM - airport check-in. We checked in with no problem and I decided to try a little Southern Charm on the desk clerk. I did NOT want an upgrade as I has chosen my room level carefully (West Wing), but I did want one that was convenient and preferrably with a view. He gave us THE BEST ROOM EVER! On the top floor, 2 doors from the elevator which was a blessing because the hallways in that hotel were IMMENSE! I loved where we stayed because we just hopped on the elevator, went to our little lobby and were outside in minutes instead of treking through the entire casino/hotel for hours to see daylight.

We hopped the shuttle to our room, settled in and then went outside to roam. We went inside NY NY, did some sightseeing, and got some lunch (he ate at Hot Chix and I ate at some burger joint - both were suprisingly good). Then we roamed over to Excalibur, hopped the monorail to Mandalay Bay then wound our way through there to the Luxor and back through Excalibur. After those first few hours, it was time to go back to our room and change for dinner. We got dressed and then walked out to the front lobby to grab a cab. By this point, hubby was getting the hang of the tipping ordeal so we hopped in a cab and sped off to the Venetian for dinner at Emeril%26#39;s Delmonico.

Let me pause to say to the ladies - WEAR OR TAKE COMFORTABLE SHOES! I had on stiletto%26#39;s and just going through our hotel to the cab and through the Venetian into the restaurant was murder! I wear heels every day, so I thought I%26#39;d be fine - BUT thank God I was smart enough to slip the Mary Jane Crocs (yes Crocs) into my evening bag!!! I made it to the restaurant and through dinner, but changed to get to our next destination. One more switchout let me walk into the show looking sexy and then walk out comfortably!

Delmonico%26#39;s - dinner was FABULOUS! We like Emeril, but weren%26#39;t prepared to LOVE the food. We started with the crabcake appetizer, drinks of course, wine, salad and gumbo, and then he had a steak (claims it was the best steak he%26#39;s ever had) and I had the jumbo shrimp pasta. We had the truffle potato chips because we%26#39;d watched him make them so many times on his show. Everything was great including our service. With tip, our total was $300 but we had WAY too much food. I heartedly recommend everything we had, although the couple next to us ordered a Caesar salad that looked TERRIBLE. They ended up sending it back - and that%26#39;s odd for salad. There%26#39;s not much you CAN mess up...

After dinner, we headed to NY NY by cab to catch Zumanity. We had great seats (there aren%26#39;t any bad ones honestly) and thought the show was great! There was quite a lot of customer interaction and we were both impressed with the traditional Cirque tricks. I felt like I had been to a ';topless'; show that was entertainng, stimulating, trashy, and classy all at the same time. PERFECT for a chick like me and my #1 guy! Anything with nekid people, devils, drag queens, and hot wet twins is right up our alley! LOL

After that we went back to our room - still on East Coast time, hubby took advantage of the comfy bed and passed out. I went down to the casino to sneak a peak at the action. We are definitely NON-gamblers and knew this going to Vegas. I played $20 in different slot machines and when it was gone I felt let-down, used, and a little dirty. Next time I%26#39;ll just give my cash to the bum on the bridge and at least feel good about it. I soon joined hubby in blissful sleep.

    Day #2

We were up and at %26#39;em early (for us) and grabbed Starbucks right downstairs (conveniently placed there for my benefit I%26#39;m sure). We then headed to the monorail to get to the North side of the strip. I wanted to take Hubby to the Imperial Palace car show (cheesy I know, but he%26#39;s a car guy). We waited for the world%26#39;s longest elevator and finally boarded after about 9 agonizing minutes spent in a very stinky hallway. We ascend to the car shrine and do the tour with the geriatric crowd. Hubby loved it and I%26#39;m glad I could make him so happy for $8.50 (USED A COUPON DUH). We took the stairs back down (no dummies are we) and from there we strolled through Harrah%26#39;s and down to the Venetian.

We headed directly to Madame Toussaud%26#39;s (used a coupon) as I thoroughly expected this to be the highlight of my trip. I was not disappointed and we spent the better part of 2 hours acting completely ridiculous and holding up the line to see the statues. Some of our pics are HILARIOUS as we groped these wax statues and posed with people living and dead. We even cracked up the real guy sitting in the AI portion with our antics. They had to pry me away from the statue of Barack Obama and I got PLENTY of funny looks from the crowd as I attempted to kick the statue of W. in the derriere.

We left there and strolled through the Venetian, soaking in the sights. We then moseyed over to the Mirage and ended up eating there. I had planned to eat at the Bellagio%26#39;s buffet, but we were nearer to the Mirage so we ate there. The buffet wasn%26#39;t half bad, and was only half good, but for only $20 a person, we thought it was worth it. Hubby had requested we do a Vegas buffet and it didn%26#39;t live up to expectations.

After lunch, we did the Secret Garden - saw the dolphins, tigers, and that adorable baby leopard. I could have watched him play all day! We left there while my husband tried to sneak a peak into the topless pool (didn%26#39;t work - they%26#39;ve cleverly designed it to be adolescent boy and husband proof).

After the Mirage we walked over to Ballys and Paris. We weren%26#39;t too excited about either, so made our way to the Bellagio. Now THIS was more like it. We loved it there and spent a good deal of time wandering. We made our way back outside (it was close to 7pm) and watched the fountains, posed for pictures and then wandered down the street. We caught the volcano and the Siren show (HORRIBLE - I was hoping that a high gust of wind would blow someone into the water just for entertainment). After that we went into the Forum shops for a nice stroll, then made our way to dinner.

9:15 dinner at Mesa. We wanted to try Mesa because, like Emeril, we like Bobby Flay. We arrived on time and were seated. Our waiter was hot and our drinks cold (try the Black Widow Mojito YUM). My biggest complaint is that it was so LOUD! We had high expectations for the food but we weren%26#39;t COMPLETELY wowed. Hubby loved the Salmon and I liked the chicken, but it just wasn%26#39;t all that. Total with tax and tip, $220. Around 11 we made our way back to our hotel, had a few drinks at the bar and turned in.

Moxie - Great TR! please ignore Korbel....

    lookin%26#39; FWD to more....

I like your trip reports so far -- where did you get all of your coupons? i%26#39;m a first timer going in may so im trying to figure things out before i go

    ';Let me pause to say to the ladies - WEAR OR TAKE COMFORTABLE SHOES!';

Guess you didn%26#39;t read our suggestions before you went since all of the regulars advise NOT to wear high heels if at all possible! LOL

Glad to see you enjoyed your trip :)

Nice trip. Wow korbel+coke get a life. Having a bad day? Come on. lol

Great report so far, I am such a lowm roller that if I put my player card # on my reservation they charge me double. I would love to see Zumanity but dont want to go by myself.

Please ignore anybody who post nasty remarks- esp ones that are fairly new with next to nothing posts.

    Day #3

I have to agree with ol%26#39; Korbel - we woke up feeling like Vegas wasn%26#39;t for us. We were bored and didn%26#39;t understand what the hype was about. I think we felt like for non-gamblers, it just wasn%26#39;t that exciting. So we prepared for another ho-hum day and decided to make the most of our first AND LAST trip to NV by seeing the Hoover Dam. Neither of us was that interested, but we decided to make a go of it. We went out, met the tacky bus service and started the trip. Fortunately for us, we had the WORST tour guide ever. If not for that we would have slept the whole way there and back - it was that boring. But at least we laughed at his expense and got a few great inside jokes out of his useless information.

Got to the dam and found out that our babysitter 2,000 miles away was in the hospital. Short freak-out while I secure a back-up plan and we can continue on our trip. We saw the dam, went in the tunnels, and were not impressed. At least we can say we%26#39;ve been there and done that. Got back to the hotel and felt like our trip was sucking a little (ok a lot). We debated just going to dinner and going to bed - READY to come back home the next day. But I was determined that I was not leaving without doing what I came for - going to a strip club.

I literally had to convince hubby to go and give Vegas one more shot. He%26#39;s not big on strip clubs here, mainly because the girls are ugly and the places trashy. I promised him that I had done my research and that I%26#39;d picked one that I was confident we%26#39;d like. So we go eat at some place downstairs - surprisingly good meal and come back upstairs to change.

We set out for the club and arrived via the most harrowing cab ride EVER around 11:30. Went in and the place wasn%26#39;t as full as I%26#39;d expected. We chat up a very sexy bouncer and he takes us to a GREAT table.

Now, let me give you some background. I%26#39;m not a prude. I enjoy beautiful women as much as any guy and I do think that a strip club is a great place to people watch. It%26#39;s FUN to go with your man - if you can handle it and if he is respectful to you. My hubby is great about it and he loves to see me have a good time! He swears he%26#39;ll never go to a strip club alone because you get 10 times more attention when you%26#39;re with a woman!

So we sit down, get a few drinks and dances and we are REALLY enjoying it. Then along comes a few girls who are ready to have fun. One of the girls gave me SO MUCH attention. She literally stayed with us for over an hour although her friend was pouting and mad about it. We did shots, danced, etc. etc. and ended up surrounded by dancers, all having a ball. The guys all around us were grateful for the extra attention the ladies were throwing around and we ended up not paying for anything at that point. My favorite girl was a doll and truly helped make our experience 10 times better. She gave us great tips for our next visit as we assured her that we would be back! She gave us her name and number (oops - I know that%26#39;s a no-no for her) and we are still in touch. We left the club around 4:30 and felt so glad to have FINALLY enjoyed our Vegas trip!

Next time we know not to waste our time or money in the casinos and head straight for what floats our boat!

Next morning we got up, checked out, did some souvenier shopping, and headed to the airport! Not much for day 4, but hangovers, layovers, and home again!!! We are already planning trip #2!

    Mi Trip report

After a loverly drive up 50 I stopped at South Tahoe having a nice lunch at The Horizon. My first time %26amp; I was impressed. Good prime rib sandwich. I like the casino although at 2:00 PM on Friday it was empty.

I spent the night in Carson City something I had never done before. I stayed at the Carson Nugget%26#39;s motel The City Center for $36.50 including tax! I was a bit concerned about the low price but found it clean with spacious decent rooms. Cable TV on a 20'; screen %26amp; FREE WI FI. Excellent King bed %26amp; in-room coffee for the AM. After my large lunch I passed on dinner , gambling a bit losing $30 at blackjack.

Next AM up early %26amp; on to Virgina City. Had nor been since maybe 2000. Much the same %26amp; as the day went on a surprisingly large crowd was on the streets for so early in the year. Had a great breakfast but do not recall the name of the cafe. Bought a new belt %26amp; one of those fake newspaper for the grandson withhis name in the Headlines.

Arrived at Ascuaga%26#39;s Nugget about one after passing through downtown Reno. The wonderfully helpful front desk gave me my favorite corner room with windows on 2 sides, views on the Sierras, king bed, couch %26amp; best of all a Recliner. The perfect Bachelor%26#39;s (just for the weekend) pad! LOL

Very busy here %26amp; the pol just too crowd for this old guy. Gambled a bit losing another $20. Had Bouillabaisse at the Oyster Bar which was very good. Early to bed after a long walking day.

Today spent about 4 hours at the pool now that the Saturday family crowded was checking out. Lunch at the pool. Gambled some more now up about $55 for the trip. I intended to eat Crab legs at the Oyster Bar but walking by the Buffet noted that it was seafood night for $19.95 %26amp; featured Crab Legs. That%26#39;s $5 less than the Oyster Bar%26#39;s crab. I seldom eat Buffets but this was Delicious! Crab Legs, Huge peel your own shrimp, Salmon, breaded shrimp, Maryland crab plus salad, potatoes, rolls, ice tea, dessert %26amp; coffee. Not a bad item in the lot. Lots other items I did not try.

So no Breakfast tomorrow but several hours at the pool. More later.

    Mi Trip report

Thanks for your trip report, Peddler. I stayed at GSR Wednesday and Thursday nights. When I woke up to a gloomy Thursday, I thought of your comments about the pool at the Nugget. I%26#39;ll have to stay there and give that pool area a try. I think of it as a Rib Cook-Off destination, but don%26#39;t stay there otherwise. Your report about the pool and the seafood will change that!

    Mi Trip report

peddler: Man, you must like the pool...every weather report i have seen has Reno in the 50%26#39;s and low 60%26#39;s....Spent last week in Vegas and it wasn%26#39;t even close to pool weather there...

    jungle-

Indoor pools make that possible! :)

Yes the Pool is huge %26amp; indoors. With very high ceilings none of that ';Y'; feeling.

My last full day again AM at the pool, then Lunch at Gabe%26#39;s deli in the sport book.

Got the car out driving by the new Baseball Park that is almost finished. Also the new gigantic Scheels store with the indoor Ferris wheel.

Last Night dinner was again at Johns Oyster Bar. Oysters on the half shell, clam chowder %26amp; a shrimp cocktail after the ';gorge'; the night before..

Up early needing to have a billing error corrected. As normal no problem it being straighten out instantly. I find the staff at the Nugget the best! I got an early check-in plus my very favorite room which is a corner one in the West tower.

This morning after checking out I finally got to Peg%26#39;s Incredible Ham %26amp; Eggs. I elected for the 1/2 ham %26amp; eggs, a wise decision. The Half order is HUGE! About a # of ham, 2 eggs, hash browns %26amp; unique Wheat/Sourdough toast. With Coffee plus great service $11.81

PS Ended up the trip Up $115 with some late night Blackjack.

Thanks so much, peddler, for a comprehensive and fun to read TR!

With all of your trips to the Nugget have you ever eaten at Trader Dick%26#39;s? I%26#39;ve looked at the menu a few times and thought it looked good but have never gone.

A number of years ago (maybe 12 to 15) but it%26#39;s really not my type of food. We often listen to the music in that bar however.

I like Orozko a lot for a romantic dinner with excellent food or that lounge for coffee/dessert while listening to the music.

Love The Oyster Bar but still think The Atlantis one spanning Virgina street is slightly better.

I as I reported was very impressed with the Seafood Buffet Sunday night. Every thing I tried was fresh %26amp; well prepared. Far better than the average buffet fare.

How is the GSR? It%26#39;s been at least 10 years since I%26#39;ve stayed there. Remember seeing Sinatra there many eons ago.

    Re: Trader Dicks

I have enjoyed a meal at TDs a few times. I can tell you that it is no Trader Vics, but it is a ton of food for the price. The tropical drinks were fun and the decor a riot. Service has always been excellent. I like the dark tiki vibe and have always had fun. However, the food (while plentiful) is not nearly as good as other places, but some items work better than others. However, I thought it was fun and have visited twice since my first visit.

    Yo!

The GSR is great, especially the Summit. It%26#39;s changed a lot since you%26#39;ve been there. It;s elegant and understated. A recent poster compared the common area to a bank lobby, saying it%26#39;s for the older, more conservative traveler. Not sure when I got either old or conservative, but guess it%26#39;s happened.*sigh*

I appreciate the details of your reports. I%26#39;ve stayed at the Nugget maybe ten times. I%26#39;ve never been to the pool and I%26#39;ve never eaten at the seafood buffet. An indoor pool would be great mid-winter when it%26#39;s dumping snow in Truckee. Not as great as a trip to Puerto Vallarta....One month from today, I%26#39;ll have a cold one at Chez Elena and think kind thought of you, Peddler.

Be sure to tell Gloria Hi from Linda %26amp; Phil.

    Win Card?

I have read a few posts refering to a Win Card, and something about buying non-refundable chips for a discount price. Can someone shed a little light on this subject such as Where does one get one of these? How exactly do they work?

    Win Card?

What you do is you purchase a set of WIN cards for $20, and you are given $30 in non-negotioable chips to use at the table games. These are currently available at the Luxor, Mandalay Bay, and Hard Rock. Other casinos have something similar for different amounts. I am assuming they are all basically the same, but when I did this at the Luxor last year, I received 3 WIN cards, with basic instructions on how to play blackjack, craps, and roulette. You will need to get these from the Players Club booth when you sign up for the Players Card. You can then take the chips and use them at the tables. It is a nice way to get started.

    Win Card?

For the most part, it%26#39;s never quiet at the civit marriage bureau. Which is good, because it will be easy to ask someone in the crowd to be your witness.

  • Bellagio Resort Fee

Is there a daily Resort Fee here? If so, how much is it and what does it cover? As always, any help much appreciated. Thanks.

    Bellagio Resort Fee

I have made something of a study of which hotels in Vegas charge a resort fee, and I have never had any info to suggest that Bellagio does, unless it%26#39;s a recent change.

    Bellagio Resort Fee

There was no resort fee added to my booking statement.

Does anyone know if the Palazzo has a resort fee?

    Thanks for your help.

As far as I know, Palazzo does not charge a resort fee.

I was just at Bellagio, no resort fee. Neither does Palazzo have one that I know of. However, those hotels do charge for using the spa and fitness centers and also for internet connections.

Just when I thought I had it all figured out- Wynn or MB?

    A little background info-

Traveling to Vegas May 11-15th for some R %26amp; G! (relaxing and gambling)

I am a HET follower- but getting sick of the BJ rules and would like to stay in different hotels for new experiences!

I would like to establish a better gambling relationship with the MGM group.

I was debating between the Mirage %26amp; MB both cost around the same price. Ultimately decided on MB- for the pool and its close to Burger Bar!

Will have a rental car- so moving around the strip is not an issue.

Here is what I am now considering and need your help-

Wynn would cost about $450.00 to stay and MB is $380.00. The difference in money is not an issue, however for those of you who have stayed at Wynn- is it snobby? I want a fun place to gamble and get a little crazy. I don%26#39;t know if I would ever have the Wynn as my main gambling mecca- too expensive table limits! Would it even make sense given the information to stay at the Wynn?

One other thing, my DH and I like the pool but don%26#39;t want to be over run with kids! I don%26#39;t think there should be too many kids in mid May at the MB pool since most will still be in school. Are the kids even an issue at the Wynn pool?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Have a fun and foolish April%26#39;s Fools Day!

    Mia

Just when I thought I had it all figured out- Wynn or MB?

';fun place to gamble and get a little crazy'; - That%26#39;s MB, not Wynn.

There will be kids at the pools, even in May. More at MB obviously. But the MB pool complex is large and the kids tend to congregate in a couple places - there are area%26#39;s that are essentially kid free.

Just when I thought I had it all figured out- Wynn or MB?

On the gaming side, Wynn generally has higher limits at the tables. So, if you want to play $10 BJ, you are out of luck. Expect $25 as the staple minimum, with a couple of $15 tables thrown in. You may fare better going mid week, my experience in only on weekends. Conversely, you can stay at Wynn and still do you gaming at Mirage or another MGM property.

Thank you for your input! I appreciate it.

    Mia

I stayed at MB in June and have spent all day at the pool and have never had a problem with kids. There will be more of them around the wave pool and lazy river but the complex is so big you can find a spot in the east or west pools and you will be fine. Or rent a cabana and have your own space. Also, MB has a casino at the pool so you can get the best of both worlds

That week in May you will probably be able to count the kids at the Wynn pool on one hand. I am serious, there will probably be less than 5 in the entire pool! If this is your primary goal, Wynn is the place to go.

Mandalay Bay won%26#39;t be that bad either that week, but there will always be kids there, especially at the wavepool and the river.

Wynn is a better hotel, period. But it is not snobby. If anything at today%26#39;s rates (and comps) it is more casual than normal.

The VP at Wynn is much better than MB, but the table limits at both casinos are about the same.

If you want a little more relaxing or luxurious experience go with Wynn, but if the pool really matters you can%26#39;t beat MB.

We like to hang out at the pool, but its not like we will be there all day every day.

The main issue for me is the gambling. I do want to establish a gaming relationship outside of HET. I am not a high roller but rather, a medium roller. I do get great offers from HET, but want to venture out.

I do like to play VP! I could spend hours playing. Also, I am a big fan of the dice but usually play at Casino Royale - they have 20x odds. My DH loves BJ, which is one of the reasons we are switching hotel properties!

I too am a pool lover. We always stay @ Harrahs, and I know some people don%26#39;t care for their pool, but I always have a blast. We were there is September with our 3 sons %26amp; their girlfriends and had the best time @ the pool. All I need to do is get wet and have cocktails!

Wynn is snobby and has higher limits. MB is a much better choice.

Just got back from Wynn, and I never felt like it was snobby. Not sure what kind of table limits you consider to be ';too expensive';, but I played $15 BJ every night I was there, and definitely noticed the $10 craps tables getting very loud and exciting.

The Wynn casino in general is the most beautiful casino I%26#39;ve ever seen, and it just ';feels'; comfortable (IMO). Can%26#39;t speak of pools because it was too cold, but I can probably count on one hand the number of kids I saw in 4 days.

Never been to MB, so I can%26#39;t offer a comparison, but I have NO problem recommending Wynn to anyone!

I am scheduled to be in Las Vegas for the FEI world cup competition arriving April 15 and leaving April 19. I booked a room at the MGM for around $700 for that time period.

Well, we have experienced some financial hardship and really need to find a better deal than that. We are still going on our trip because we would lose more money than we would save if we don%26#39;t go... we just need to scour the deals.

25th Anniversary Tour (3/8-3/13) aka Doing Our Part

Well, anyway, we were among the relative few there to do our part in stimulating both ourselves and the local LV economy during our splurge-inspired, 25th anniversary celebration stay at Encore 3/8-3/13. It was a great trip, with a near overload of flavorful dining, joyful entertainment, wonderful company, artful accommodations, and generally pitiful gambling (expect for my wife, the brand new VP player, of course). ;-)

Disclaimers/Warnings: First, my write-ups are always long, so either grab a cup-o-coffee for the long haul, or bail right now, instead. I will try to break this up by day so there isn’t so much all at once. I post these observations solely on the basis of how we perceived them from our experience, recognizing and respecting that others might have the polar opposite reaction to the same activity at a different time. In other words, IMHO, YMMV, and all that, so if you don’t agree with us, let’s agree to disagree without rancor. Second, I took hundreds of pictures, some of which I will be posting very soon on another, linked site. I know that everyone loves pics, so please be patient until l can get them all posted. There are pictures of Switch during its three, separate metamorphoses, as requested by a member, some fabulous shots of the nightclub XS (albeit during the day), and a number of the Encore rooms and Encore/Wynn public spaces.

The TR will discuss, among other things, a five-day trail of wining and dining that, surprisingly, resulted in only marginal weight gain (must have been all the effort we made winding our way through the hoards of card-slappers during the day). For those looking for a quick summary, the Encore is a beautiful, fabulous place with discreet but decidedly “unstuffy” service. The spa is one of the best my wife or I have seen. Rooms are quite nice and the décor/materials of deceivingly high-quality. The casino is attractive and comfortable, but small and quiet, with a teeny, tiny sports book (the Wynn casino was consistently more “hopping” – though LV as a whole was generally S-L-O-W during our stay). We ate at the following restaurants, on- and off-site, and provide summary reviews on a 0-10 scale below (more details later – we are TOUGH graders):

    RESTAURANTS:

    ON-SITE:

    Switch: Food Р8.5; D̩cor - 8.5; Service - 8.5 (SUPER fresh seafood - Best Gratin Dauphin, EVER!)

SW Steakhouse: Food Р6.5; D̩cor Р6.0; Service - 5.0 (GREAT steaks, else it was so-so)

    Bartolotta: Food - 9.5+; D̩cor Р8.5; Service Р9.5 (A top 5-10 all-time meal experience РDO NOT MISS)

Daniel Boulud: Food Р8.0; D̩cor - 8.0+; Service Р8.5 (Not up to Daniel NYC standards but still excellent)

Alex: Food Р8.5; D̩cor Р9.5; Service Р9.5 (Alex was a bit precious, IMHO - trying to bring TOO much Asian fusion influence to classic French recipes but, still, sumptuous).

Country Club: Food Р7.5; D̩cor Р9.5; Service 7.5 (Fabulous setting and tasty, if not overly exciting, lunch choices.)

Tableau: Food Р8.0; D̩cor - 7.5; Service 7.5 (Very enjoyable, but very pricy breakfast in a quaint setting)

Red 8: Food Р9.0; D̩cor Р7.0; Service - 6.5 (Outstanding dim sum and Pad Thai)

Society Caf̩: Food - 8.5; D̩cor Р8.0; Service Р8.0 (Eclectic, fun menu. Extremely well-balanced flavors in each dish.)

The Buffet: Food - 7.0; D̩cor Р7.0; Service Рn/a (Food rated relative to other on-site offerings РCompared to most all other buffets, we give it an 11 out of 10.)

    OFF –SITE:

Mon Ami Gabi: Food Р7.0; D̩cor 8.5/7.0; Service Р6.0 (Outside seating can be fabulous (inside nothing special), food can be very good, but never great)

    SHOWS:

Fab Four Live! A nostalgic trip back, full of memories. Very cool to see how Sgt. Pepper’s music and beyond might have been performed live (since the Beatles never did these songs in concert).

Cher. What a remarkable woman. Looks and acts 35ish. Went in feeling old – came out feeling…well, at least younger.  Her banter was over the top “self-love”, but that has always kinda been her shtick. We enjoyed the tribute to Sonny (seems she correctly figures that she’d probably just be a skinny, old “unfamous” woman without him/each other). All in all, a very impressive performance that was very well worth seeing.

KA (Cirque du Soliel). OK, these folks are flat out UNREAL. Extremely talented, strong, and well choreographed acrobatics and dance. These are modern day daredevils – with a story. Simply outstanding.

I will subsequently post Day 1 through Day 6 editions throughout today and tonight for those folks still left standing…….a link to pictures will appear, too.

25th Anniversary Tour (3/8-3/13) aka Doing Our Part

Thanks for the TR - and congrats on 25 LONG years -- my 25th is today and and we couldn%26#39;t make it to Vegas because of work obligations...can%26#39;t wait to hear more - thanks to you I will be celebrating vicariously!

25th Anniversary Tour (3/8-3/13) aka Doing Our Part

I personally like the way you rate, title, and space the different businesses since it is easier for my eyes to read longer reports with that kind of format...thanks and enjoying the details :)

Laketime: Our 25th anniversary was 8/2008. We had everthing from broken bones to family deaths come up and we were JUST now able to get away. So, I KNOW where you%26#39;re coming from. ;) Funny how being married 25 years seems to be such a big deal these days. When I was a kid,it was the norm. Now, we%26#39;re the exception - as usual. Ha!

great start can%26#39;t wait to hear more, love the ratings

Congrats on your anniversary, and it certainly sounds like a wonderful trip. I very much look forward to your TR. And will try and come back and read it when it is all posted tonight.

Welcome Back. I was anxiously awaiting your TR and see what your thoughts were on Encore. Did you ever order room service?

    Day 1:

Arrived at 11:30 on 3/8 from San Jose via US Airways with a boring, controlled landing at McCarran. There were neither stray birds nor a water landing in the “Hudson” at NYNY. As a lark, I booked a surprise limo through Presidential Limo and the pick-up service was efficient and very friendly. We were met at the baggage claim and did not have to walk too far to the limo. We arrived at Encore about 12:15 via the Tower Suite (TS) entrance. We were warmly welcomed and led personally to the registration desk. The door (greeting, hailing cabs, helping with packages) and bell staff (promptness, friendliness, efficiency) is among the best. The TS registration area is very tastefully appointed and well-staffed. I debated doing the $20 trick at this place, figuring it would take a 50 to even arouse interest. The clerk asked if we’d like an upper floor or a view. My wife immediately says, “BOTH!”. As she was looking for a room and getting our resort cards (Red Card) ready, we were offered hot towels for our hands and cold water to drink. She came back with a 36th floor room with a superb view of the Strip. More on the rooms later.

    ENCORE CASINO HIGHLIGHTS/VENETIAN RANT

Because we secured some tickets through Travelocity, and we had ducats for Fab Four Live! that same night, we headed for a nearby kiosk (Venetian). On the way, we used our Red Cards in the Encore casino for about an hour playing video poker (VP). My wife had never played before, or gambled much at all – though she is a very good card player in not so friendly games with friends. ;) We each won about fifty bucks at dollar VP and I got that uneasy feeling of wondering whether it was a sign of good luck to come or a cruel taste before the ultimate reckoning, as it were…..The Encore casino on that Sunday at 13:30 was, however, virtually deceased. The dealers were trying their best to look interested, 2/3 of whom were standing alone and with most tables having only 2-3 players. One crap table was open and was not full. Roulette had only sporadic use. Slots and VP machines were “pretty damn quiet”, according to a host. This was a condition which improved throughout the week of our stay, but the Encore casino was always MUCH less “hopping” than the casino at Wynn and at a couple of others we saw (Caesar’s and Flamingo, in particular). As an aside, we were sorely disappointed in what we saw as a less than graceful aging at the Venetian. We stayed there when it was nearly new and it appears that they are now REALLY going the authentic route by allowing the place to become as worn and dirty as Venice, itself. ‘Nuff said, lest I make someone angry.

    MON AMI GABI

We stopped after at Mon Ami Gabi, where we’ve eaten before. On a nice day, sitting outside, the place is hard to beat for people watching. The food is consistently good, but not great. Given the prices, it isn’t a bad value for the strip. My wife had the always reliable onion soup and an open-faced shrimp salad sandwich that was fresh, tasty, and generous. I had the special cod with a lemon-butter sauce offering. It was prepared very nicely but served with warming table-quality finger potatoes and carrots. An overall very enjoyable time, except for the service which, while friendly enough, was the definition of slow on this visit.

    TRADER (ED) VIC’s

We then proceeded to Trader Vic’s in Planet Hollywood to have a couple of drinks before Fab Four Live. I don’t know whether it was the long wait for service, the weak drinks (a WEAK Mai Tai???) or the otherwise total bastardization of what was once Trader Vic’s, but we had only one drink, served in a thin plastic cup on a nondescript patio that could have been anywhere in the world unless you are seated on the glass rail facing Las Vegas Boulevard next to the drunk guy with the sailor hat that sorta, kinda sings karaoke to a variety of odd music, or unless you are watching the two young ladies at the bar making a point of showing everyone their tongues as they “share” their mojitos and looking over their shoulders to see the crowd reaction. Anyway, gotta go to a real tiki bar next time and leave Trader Vic’s to fond and distant memories.

    FAB FOUR LIVE!

Off to Fab Four Live!, which I’d highly recommend if you are a Beatle fan. I say that from the prespective of someone who once thought Beatles knock-off bands were about as lame as it could get. However, given the perspective of the years and the deaths of both John and George making any thought of a “reunion” impossible, being able to see songs done live (i.e “A Day in the Life”, “The End”, “Revolution” and other post-Sgt. Pepper’s tunes) was immensely enjoyable to us. I found John and Paul to be the most dead-on, musically and vocally, and Geoger the weakest. The exception was “Here Comes the Sun” which he did beautifully. We bought our ticket through Travelocity and paid by category. Our seats wound up being front seats, right stage. The place was maybe half full, but they still rocked the place. Bottom line? A good one to see once for any Beatle fan. Though we were literally on top of the action, I didn’t see a seat in the place in the somewhat smaller venue that would have been “bad”, should someone want to save dough on the tickets.

    SWITCH RESTAURANT

We went back to Encore to rest and fresh before a 21:00 reservation at Switch. Switch is the place you’ve heard about where the décor changes three different times (every twenty minutes) during the course of a meal. It is pulled off with aplomb - as the lights dim and a tone sounds, the ceiling panels shift and/or cantilever, the light fixtures expand or fold, pictures and mirrors fall in place over the last, and the far wall changes from all windows overlooking the gardens, to a stone wall, to a tapestry draped parlor-look. Amazing. Pictures will follow later.

The food at Switch is first-rate. We had the Seafood Tower for two after seeing it recommended. It was served on a piece of sculptured metal art work which emitted vapors from the top (dry ice) and had a story that is now lost in the swirl of my martini. I do recall that it bore the freshest and sweetest of seafood. Oysters, clams, king crab, cavier, lobster, tuna tartare (super good), two kinds of excellent cerviche, multiple sauces, etc., etc. Even moderate eaters could make a “before the show” meal out of the tower, alone, it was that generous. Since we were there AFTER the show, we ate more. ;)

Wife had the Arctic Char in a complex Pinot Noir reduction, served with spinach. I had Ahi Tuna, plainly grilled with lemon. In both cases, the fish was perfectly fresh and done just right – flaky, but still juicy for the Char (salmon-like) and just seared on both sides for the tuna (melt in the mouth). I found the Pinot an odd match for the fish sauce, but it was quite good and very carefully seasoned. With the main course we enjoyed at 2007 Kistler Chardonnay (Sonoma County). We had the seared foie gras which was wonderful, seared to a “snap” on the outside and creamy nothingness (aside from the rich and wonderful flavor) on the inside. Worth the $12 extra. We had wanted to find a place with lyonaisse potatoes, but “settled” for the gratin dauphin, instead. No mistake! These gratin potatoes were the best we’ve had ANYWHERE. They have that luxuriously rich buttery, cheesy flavor that is infused in the uniformly thin slices of perfect doneness. Really, the kind you envision when you read the French cookbook and which never seems to live up in practice (at least in my kitchen). We forced ourselves to order the Milk Chocolate Crunch Bar to share with coffee. Our waiter, Bradley, who in addition to the sommelier, provided helpful and dignified service throughout, brought us an extra Crème Brulee which had “Happy 25th Anniversary” decorated on the top. M-O-A-N….

    COMA

We went back to our room, called to postpone our breakfast reservation from 8:30 to 9:30, looked at our chocolate from turn-down service and “retired”.

Girl, after all my questioning, we DID NOT order room service. Can you believe it?! Actually, we went to bed so D A M N full every night that the thought of room service was more in the lines of nice big pot of Milk of Magnesia.

LOL. Its okay. As long as you enjoyed yourself. Did you press the button so you wouldn%26#39;t be disturbed or at least try the doorbell? LMAO.

Oh, we used the privacy button. Ha!

When we first arrived, the bellman rang the doorbell. If not for your earlier TR, I would have been fooled - as I then allowed my wife to be. ;)

    w-2

I know you will be provided a w-2 if you win 1200 or above on one slot spin but what is the rule on table games ? Will one hand resulting in a payout above 1200 result in a w-2 ?

    Thank You.

    w-2

    no. and it%26#39;s a w-2g.

    Rok Vegas

Who%26#39;s been to ROK Vegas and how was it? Whay type of crowd? Music? Vibe? What about on a thursday night?

Got admission and two free drinks with our upcoming stay in October and was wondering if it%26#39;s worth taking advantage of. I just hate turning down free drinks...

    Rok Vegas

Bump. I would like info on this too please if anyone has been. Rudegrle, did you have to book at NYNY to get free passes??? Thx, Luna

    Rok Vegas

I was there on a Friday night but it was very late on during the night like nearer closing time, place was nice played more dance music.

This was the Friday night before Katy Perry opened it so maybe it was just trying out different things.

Luna - admission and two free drinks come with the room, as well as a couple other offers. NYNY is not my first coice, but will do for one night.

Thanks Rudegrle, I will probably check it out when I go at the end of September... Hoping for a decent Rock club, not another dance club. I%26#39;ll post a review when I get back since it doesn%26#39;t seem like we are getting much feedback yet!

Sorry girls that i could not be much more help i was a bit worse for wear by the time i got into the club.

Luna please report back as I%26#39;m not going until October and would really like to know if it%26#39;s worth the free drinks or not.

The ROK was one of the worst clubs I%26#39;ve been to. Everyone who works there is angry at life and it%26#39;s tiny, overpriced and disappointing. There are so many better places in Vegas - don%26#39;t waste your time here. You can get free passes almost everywhere.

  • Vegas Hard Rock Pool question

I saw some other posting about this but they%26#39;re from a few years back and I figured things may have changed about the Hard Rock%26#39;s pool access. We have a group heading to Vegas and staying at the Hard Rock in May on a Thurs-Sun. Some friends (girls in their late 20%26#39;s) may book at another hotel but we want them to come %26amp; party at the Hard Rock pool some of the days. Will they be able to get in (free or charged?) Do you need a key or wristband now or any type of cross check to a room? We%26#39;re wanting to know for the normal days and for Rehab.

    Thanks!!!!

    Sarah

    Vegas Hard Rock Pool question

Hotel guests can get into rehab for free. They are also able to add one single person to the guestlist per room for free as well. The rest will have to pay admission.

    Rehab is strictly Sundays.

And Rehab opens April 19 this year, with Snoop Dogg as the entertainment.

    What did you wear out?

I am having problems deciding on what to wear out.. For Dinner/Dancing. I will probably only REALY dress up for one night! I would like ideas/Pictures of what you wore!

    What did you wear out?

    Pretty typical:

    vegas.napkinnights.com/pics/view_image.php…

    vegas.napkinnights.com/pics/view_image.php…

    What did you wear out?

I always find this question interesting. Is what we wore going to change how you dress? I for one always wear heels, but most here say don%26#39;t, wear flats be comfortable. That dosen%26#39;t make me stop wearing them. When I was at Tryst last weekend? whenever, I had on a cute little flower dress and big giant heels. For dinner jeans, RnR, a velvet tank and heels (kind of my standard). But you should dress how you want. What do you wear at home?

Thanks Dave, I appreciated the tips.

    Norgetroll,

Must have left out my openess in my Profile. I, for one, don%26#39;t believe in wearing clothes unless its an absolute must! Besides did you not see that Im from Texas? All we do is ride horses all day long and take baths in wash tubs and gather around our campfires everynight for entertainment! ;-)

You%26#39;re quite welcome, but I was being a little tongue-in-cheek; this isn%26#39;t what I wear personally; a)I%26#39;m a guy and b)I don%26#39;t look quite as good in one of those short dresses! ;-)

Although (in an attempt to actually be helpful), that site that those pictures are on:

    http://vegas.napkinnights.com/

has tons of pictures from the top clubs, pool parties, etc, so you can get an idea....

    Dave..

Ha ha! I kinda figured you were a guy but come one now! As we Texans say ';Gotta try em before ya knock em'; You never know how good ya look in one til you try it!! ha haha!!! I do really appreciate it, See my thing is I dont mind wearing heels but only short ones cuz ummm Im 6 ft 2in.. My hubby, only 5ft 11 in. Im just kinda stuck on what to wear dressy w/o the heels and figured I just throw it out there and see who gave me some ideas! Im sooo excited I can barely contain myself!

I was wondering the same thing. From those pictures I can tell I will probably be ';over'; dressed. I am not even sure where to get clothes with that little fabric. I am bringing a lot of pants and dressy tops and some jeans.

Ha! Thanks; maybe I%26#39;ll try one of those minidresses next time.... You never know!

We%26#39;ll, I%26#39;m 6%26#39;-4'; so I%26#39;m usually one of the tallest in the room, but I think it%26#39;s sexy to see a woman who%26#39;s taller than her husband, and he%26#39;s comfortable/confident with it!

    Have a great trip!

I truly do not understand how adults can%26#39;t figure out what to wear. Is it that hard?

Since you asked, what I wore the last half dozen times, at least, for dinner, dancing and gambling is basic - a LBD, appropriate shoes and great accessories. Change the accesories and the LBD goes anywhere.

You can, of course, change the LBD to whatever basic works for you.

For me it has always been, and will continue to be, the LBD - it goes from dinner at Alex to the opera in Europe - with minor accessory changes. One of my favorites is over 50 yr old - my children and daughters-in-law have worn it. A true basic goes anywhere. Pick yours and go with it.

I can see why that site is called ';Napkinnights';...all they are wearing is napkins!

I wore out my ATM card last trip...

Such a wonderful problem; Four Seasons or Wynn/Encore?

Our short May trip (4 nights) is currently booked at Four Seasons under their $149 email offer. And I figured this was probably pretty safe from change as it includes Saturday night.

This morning my wife forwards an email from Wynn for May dates at $109, with $100 slot %26amp; $50 resort credit. And it includes our Saturday.

Her message: Such a wonderful problem. What do you want to do? Maybe we can go to a longer stay.

We%26#39;ve stayed at Wynn many times, but haven%26#39;t been to Encore yet. We%26#39;ve stayed at Mandalay Bay and THEhotel many times, but haven%26#39;t stayed at Four Seasons yet.

Location doesn%26#39;t matter, because this trip is mostly to rest and we will spend most of our trip on the grounds of either hotel.

Does Four Seasons include any ameneties that Wynn doesn%26#39;t?

I can%26#39;t remember the last time I had to choose between 2 LV hotels that I hadn%26#39;t stayed at before. I%26#39;m open for input or suggestions.

BTW: You notice they send the offers for Wynn and Four Seasons to my wife, while I get the ones from Luxor %26amp; MGM. You think these marketing people don%26#39;t know what they%26#39;re doing? lol.

Such a wonderful problem; Four Seasons or Wynn/Encore?

Encore has suites and from the pics I%26#39;ve seen it looks quite nice. Also the rate is $129 a night which is very good for a place that just opened up.

Such a wonderful problem; Four Seasons or Wynn/Encore?

I can%26#39;t speak from experience, but the first thought I have is do you want to stay in a hotel with or without a casino? Isn%26#39;t that the difference?

Ducky: Four Seasons is on the upper floors of the Mandalay Bay towers. It is probably just as close to the casino as the West Wing rooms at MGM or the Spa Tower at Bellagio.

But it is a factor because Wynn has some playable VP while MB does not. As a matter of fact when we stay at MB, we don%26#39;t gamble there at all. So it would be the same at Four Seasons.

This trip is to rest, not to gamble. Our greatest activities will probably be a show, and maybe the meet at PH.

If we wanted to gamble we would stay off-strip, where the gambling is so much better.

Stay closer to whichever show you%26#39;ll see.

Is the tram still not working from MB to Excalibur or will you have a car?

Do you like the monorail, or a taxi for PH, from either location?

If no car, and tram is down, I go for Wynn/Encore.

ktinca, I would probably do the FS. More of different reference point. Encore and Wynn are more similar than Wynn and FS. I%26#39;d like your take. And, if you are not using the casino, FS%26#39;s service, small private pool, spa etc. are very nice. Verandah is great for breakfast too.

If relaxation is the goal, I vote for the Four Seasons. Although the Four Seasons is attached to MB, it has a separate lobby that is far removed from the slot machines and general noise from the casino floor. It makes for a very peaceful entry back to your room.

Also, MB permits the Four Seasons guests to use their facilities, but not vice versa. So you can enjoy the crowds of the MB pool, or escape to a much more serene (and smaller) Four Seasons pool area.

Underpar: Verandah for breakfast is a plus, but Wynn has Tableau so for us that%26#39;s a wash. Besides that%26#39;s only one morning, most of our breakfasts are coffee and danish by the pool.

Sarvis: The MB pool is a big factor. My wife loves the lazy river and would probably spend one of the weekday mornings there.

Personally, for convienence I would lean towards Wynn as I could go downstairs and play VP in the mornings, and play poker there while she is at the spa. I would have to leave MB for this.

But from a financial point of view, I don%26#39;t think we are ever going to see this rate from Four Seasons again, while Wynn/Encore will always be there for us.

Splitting a four night trip is not a consideration, if we were to include both hotels we would have to extend it, obviously increasing the cost.

This is her trip for Mothers Day, so she gets to decide. I just want to give her as much information as possible. Thanks for the input.

Well Ktinca...that%26#39;s what you get for asking a Ducky to help.

I am sorry but was thinking of another property, but at least you did receive some valid replies to your inquiry and sorry for not being very helpful :(

Reborn Newbie Advice Needed - Wynn & TI

    Hey Everyone,

After 2 years of being away from Las Vegas, I decided to take Wynn and TI up on their offers of free rooms, which, BTW, I was never offered in the past. Must be a sign of the economy and low occupancy rates.

What advice can you offer me on the availability of free drinks being offered in VP bars at Wynn and TI?

Any other advice to someone who has been away for the past 2 year?

I%26#39;ll be there Sunday through Wednesday.

Thanks in advance for any and all advice you can offer.

Reborn Newbie Advice Needed - Wynn %26amp; TI

Wynn is notorious for being stingy with free drinks at VP bars - as in, they don%26#39;t offer them.

Reborn Newbie Advice Needed - Wynn %26amp; TI

At Wynn you will get drinks on the floor no problem, but not at all the bars. Don%26#39;t worry the paytables are the same if you look for them.

One HUGE suggestion. TI first then move to Wynn. When switching hotels you always move up, so you%26#39;re not too disappointed in the lesser one.

Thanks so much for the advice.

I%26#39;ll be staying at TI first then Wynn to make the shock a bit easier !! ;-)

I remembered posts about free drinks at the Wynn VP Bar, but, couldn%26#39;t come up with the exact policy.

Your advice has been a great help!

    Thanks again.

    Checklist

Okay, I%26#39;ve got the hotel booked. Got the flights booked. Filled in the ESTA form thing. Already have the passport. Ordered the dollars.

Am I missing anything out that I need to do, like some form or something that I won%26#39;t be able to get into the US without?

And I don%26#39;t need to bring a copy of the ESTA form with me do I? It said I didn%26#39;t so I%26#39;m guessing the US government wouldn%26#39;t lie to me right?!

    Checklist

    ';I%26#39;m guessing the US government wouldn%26#39;t lie to me right?!';

    sure they wouldn%26#39;t

    Checklist

course not the American goverment is the most trust worthy organisatiuon in the world :-P

If you%26#39;re not wearing your ';I heart Obama'; tshirt upon arrival, you will be put on the first flight back to the UK.

Funny you should say that because I actually do own an ';I heart Obama'; t-shirt.

Okay that was a lie, but I wouldn%26#39;t mind one with a big picture of him smiling in the background. In fact I might track one down now :)

I take it that I%26#39;m not forgeting anything then due to the nature of the responses

    Toothbrush?

Hey... a toothbrush?????? Isn%26#39;t he from the UK??

    Haha, yeah a toothbrush.

It%26#39;s just a myth about the British and our bad teeth JerseyGal. It just so happens that Burnley fans went to the US and obviously they have bad teeth, so the rumour spread that we were all like that. We aren%26#39;t.

  • Favorite casual restaurant at each casino including dt

Arriving in Vegas late Thursday for 5 nights. Traveling with a great friend who is not into trying different foods. Looking for places that will satisfy us both.

What is your favorite casual restaurant?

Favorite casual restaurant at each casino including dt

I am a fan of Canter%26#39;s Deli at the Mirage. Good food ( deli style ) and casual atmosphere.

Note: For the foodie friend, 4 Mirage resturants are offering Prix Fixe Meals for 29.99 ( does not include alcohol ) You can check out the Mirage website for more info, but the restuants are FIN, Stack, Onda and Kokomos.

Favorite casual restaurant at each casino including dt

    Snacks at Bellagio

    BLT Burger at Mirage

Burger Bar at Mandalay Bay (in the Mandalay Place shop)

Stage Deli in the Sports Book at MGM

Any of the quick eateries in NYNY (the Greenwich Village streetscape)

    America in NYNY

Buffets would be a safe choice; non-adventurous eaters can usually find something; try Wynn, Bellagio and Spice Market for the best.

    Margaritaville...casual and fun

Grand Lux Cafe at The Venitian.

Second both Grand Lux and Margaritaville.

Burger Bar at MB is always good. Fun atmosphere and great food.

I know most would say it is not casual but we like Verandah at Four Seasons. We feel very comfortable there in sweats or dressed up. Staff is always friendly and warm. When we need a last minute place to eat it is always our pick.

    Mr Lucky%26#39;s

    Mirage - BLT Burger

    Venetian - Valentino Cafe

    TI - Isla

    MGM - W Pucks

    NYNY - 9 Fine Irishmen

Grand Lux at V and House of Blues at MB

    At MainStreet Station, 777 Pub

At Four Queens Chicago ( for pizza and beer)

at Golden Nugget- Grotto- more upscale than the others, but still a good choice for Italian food.

    All of these are Downtown.

    Loosest slots?

Coming to Vegas for Thanksgiving weekend with the boys...any recommendations on which casinos have ';loosest'; slots? I hear downtown casinos are looser, but we%26#39;re staying at the Imperial on the Strip, and will spend most of our time in that area. i usually play the dollar slots. Any input would be appreciated!! Thanks!!!

    Loosest slots?

They are all the same. If your lucky you may get a jackpot.

    OFF_STRIP are better payouts.

    Loosest slots?

We just returned 2 weeks ago and my wife and I did real well at TI and Paris. We played at almost every casino on the strip and these 2 treated us best. But like everyone will tell you it all depends on being at the right machine at the right time.

There is really no answer to this question. It is pure luck. I don%26#39;t play the slots but I do play VP- and you can clearly see the payoffs so you know what you are playing right off. I have had some trips where I might as well have just thrown my money up in the air on the strip or gone to the front desk and just given them the money. This last trip I hit a RF in three casinos- the same ones that on previous trips wouldn%26#39;t even let me play for any period of time. People are going to tell you which casinos they had luck at on their previous trips- but that means nothing. You may be just as lucky- but more than likely you won%26#39;t be that lucky.

I%26#39;m also a heavy vp player.

I%26#39;ve won royal flushes at Paris, Luxor, Orleans and Bally%26#39;s so of course that%26#39;s where i like to play!

Downtown is no longer loose, don%26#39;t waste time going there

Try Blazing 7%26#39;s $1x3max coin in at Rio or Sunset station..often pay off $200 to $300 BEFORE you have $200 coin in

Or triple Diamond at groups of machines labeled 98% payback (NOT ';up to'; 98% payout)

    Mirage/MGM properties are notoriously tight

If you are sticking to Slots, IP isn%26#39;t too bad, but you want to find a place with good comp/reward points, most of the time that鈥檚 all you have left after playing those horrid machines. IP comps are OK too, you play enough you can get a discount on your room or even comped (if not already), otherwise Harrahs (casinos) aren%26#39;t too bad and you can use the same card at all of them (expect IP, I think). Never had good luck at MGM/Mirage either, but the tables are nice.

    Good Luck!

It%26#39;s probably all just luck because the machines just spit out random numbers. Here%26#39;s a little article on slots:

    hotpeppercasino.com/slots/las_vegas_slots.ht鈥?/a>

The 2 notable things I read from that website were play in a high traffic area where a jackpot will encourage others to keep feeding the machines, and play your dollar slots, because the higher dollar slots generate more profit for the Casino faster.

I won both times at South Coast, but I still think it%26#39;s random luck.

    Dont belive the ';RANDOM'; excuse.

If it were random, each wheel would spin the same number of times. THEY dont.

If you pay attention to the spin, sometimes 1 wheel is either short or long of the other 2 wheels. Computer controlled my friend.

I have had themost luck at Paris on the strip...Next in this order would be: Bally%26#39;s, Rio, Harrah%26#39;s, IP and then downtown at the MSS...

Truly, the loosest slots to be found in Nevada though are in Reno.

    Woodpecker is right.

They are computer chip controlled, to spit out random numbers. =)

Mirage Pool - Trouble finding chair?

There has been some talk in the past on this forum about having trouble finding seats, especially at the Flamingo. Does anyone have any experience at the Mirage? Is this another property where you have to get down to the pool at 9am just to find a chair? My recent experience has been at the MGM where chairs are plentiful and I would hate to have to fight for a spot when I go late in June. Can anyone help with this topic?

Mirage Pool - Trouble finding chair?

I have stayed at The Mirage 4 times. You really need to get down there by no later than 8-8:30. Then you get to stand in line until they open (usually around 9:00). The best seats are right when you enter, go straight, and slightly to the right of the big, main pool. You can get the towels on the way to your seat and throw them down on the seats you want to reserve them. You should probably put some newspapers/magazines and suntan lotion on the seats as well if you are going to leave and come back later to sit down. People have been known to take the towels off the reserved seats and take them. You could also tip a cabana boy $5 to watch your seats.

These people who line up early mean business. There is literally RUNNING to get the seats, so be prepared. It doesn%26#39;t matter what day of the week, either....this happens every day.

Once you have claimed your territory, you%26#39;ll have a great time at the pool. It%26#39;s one of the best pools in Vegas! Enjoy!

Mirage Pool - Trouble finding chair?

I would get there pretty close to the opening time. Not right at opening, so you don%26#39;t have to stand in line. But this is a beautiful pool facility, and very popular, so yes, it can fill up very quickly.

I saw many openings last June when we went to secure the Cabanas. But that was pretty close to opening time.

They have cabana boys? All I noticed were the two Cabana girls we had =))

LOL! I meant to say pool/towel boys! Who, knows, maybe there are girls now!

Sounds serious...I am not sure I have seen anyone run to get a chair at a resort. Thanks for the information. I guess I will have to get out of bed a little earlier than I was planning. Which means I will have to go to bed earlier. Thinking about it, that is really cut down my vacation time in Vegas. I usually not in bed before 3 - 4 AM when am out there.

Just get someone else to go down and throw down the towels. Or, you can just put the towels down to reserve the seats and go back to bed! The worst thing is having to get up early with a hangover and lack of sleep to get a pool seat! But it%26#39;s worth it once you get it! Enjoy!

is this an issue in April(now)? or just the summer months?

and ms spawn, putting a towel down when you have no intention of using the chairs is selfish, greedy and immature. If you are not going to use the chair let someone else use it. Poeple act like they own the place with reserving chairs all morning and never even sitting in them!

also, is this just isolated to the mirage, or can you expect this all over vegas?

I don%26#39;t think reserving a seat is selfish or greedy. I only put my towels down early to go get a cup of coffee. I was back in 5 minutes. Call it what you want, but you%26#39;ll soon see if you stay there, when people are shoving you aside to take the seats.

In answering your other question, I have stayed at MGM, Mirage, and Bellagio in the past. The only place I saw the pool lines like that is at the Mirage. The other places usually are a bit less crowded. This happens mainly in the spring and summer, when it gets warmer out.

Laughlin Ranch question for Grif or Polka

What is the Ranch like for food? We have now decided to get married in Las Vegas sorry!! But it was no contest with cost but are honeymooning in Laughlin. Just can%26#39;t wait to come back. We are coming to Laughlin the day after the wedding so thought it might me nice to have a really nice post wedding reception meal then.

Laughlin Ranch question for Grif or Polka

We have eaten at Laughlin Ranch twice and the food was very good both times. The last time was a year ago though. Their dining room is very nice, overlooking the course. Also, be sure to play our newest course, Los Lagos, if you can. I actually like it as much if not better than Laughlin Ranch.

Laughlin Ranch question for Grif or Polka

Would Saltgrass fit our reception criteria? I have read alot about it on this forum but didn%26#39;t see the restaurant when we were in Laughlin. Would like somewhere quite special but with fussy eaters need to be a steak and fries option too. Thank you.

My wife and I really enjoy Saltgrass in the Golden Nugget. You should have no trouble reserving an area there a week or more ahead of time.

Laughlin Ranch offered a varied menu when we were there last. All the way from steaks to burgers. It is certainly a classier place than our restaurants along the river. Although Saltgrass Steak House, The Range, The Lodge, Hickory Pit and the Prime Rib Room are all quite nice. The expensive restaurant upstairs at the Pioneer, Granny%26#39;s, is a bit too exotic for what you are looking for I am sure. Who eats Ostrich much anyway? ha, ha

Thank you for all your info, any thoughts about the Tropicana Steak House as we are staying there. I think ostrich is definitely out!!

I would avoid all of the Trop restaurants. Although the hotel and casino is quite nice, we have had only bad experiences in their restaurants.

Actually you might want to look at Granny%26#39;s menu online. The most ';exotic'; things on the menu are duck and pheasant. Not sure why the snarky reference to ostrich.

    pioneerlaughlin.com/pioneercasinorestgran1.h鈥?/a>

If it is an intimate dinner for just the bride and groom, I can%26#39;t think of a better place.

They are also quite capable of handling larger groups if your party is bigger.

You might also call ahead to have the chef prepare a set menu for your table.

    Congratulations on the upcoming nuptials.

Avoid all trop restaurants.....why grif.....i have eaten at all of them in the last month....they were all good.....better value than anything else on the river. Buffet is super.....so is the upscale.

    Lobster Anyone?

I posted yesterday asking about restaurant for 10th wedding anniversary, thanks for the replies, now getting more specific, what about good Lobster? Any ideas on that? Thanks all.

    Lobster Anyone?

The Palm in Caesars Forum Shops. Go to their website they%26#39;ll explain all their present and upcoming lobster specials.

    Lobster Anyone?

Last year we had lobster at a restaurant in the Golden Nugget called Vic and Anthonys. It was HUGE!! I think its like 1 1/2 pounds and we ordered it to split. It was around $98 or so.

We went to Joe%26#39;s Seafood in Caesars for my wedding dinner, I thought it was fantastic...can%26#39;t remember the lobster specifically but the Crab was HUGE and delish!

About 18 months ago we had fantastic lobster in Las Vegas at Gallaghers in NYNY. My husband is from the maritimes so knows a thing or 20 about lobster so asked some questions first (ie: fresh? atlantic? size etc) it was fresh, it was atlantic, it was huge about 2 lbs he estimates which isn%26#39;t usually that good (too big) but it was really really good. 4 of us all shared it at that size. Now I could be mistaken in this but we THINK that the steak and lobster meal was ABOUT MAYBE $120? hope this helps.

    Bump

I%26#39;ve had very large lobsters that were delicious (4 lbs. plus). I think if they are overcooked they become tough, cooked properly large ones are great.

I don%26#39;t have any experience with lobsters in Vegas, but at home I sure do. A 2 lb. lobster is in no way huge afterall, most of it is shell. A nice Maine or cold water lobster is what to go after. By the way , we shared a 7 lb. when the Pat%26#39;s won the superbowl. That was huge! Lobster gets messy to eat so beware.

Lobster ravioli at Jasmine - one of our favorites. We order many plates - coupled with a fabulous wine and salad - perfect. Take the wine to the fountains - and then play blackjack %26amp; craps - a good evening.

Everytime I go to Las Vegas I get the craving for Lobster. But after seeing what price they want for it I lose my interest. A couple of months or so ago I heard Lobster was going for $4.99 a pound on the market so I thought maybe Las Vegas would be running some specials but no such luck. The prices for dinners were the same regardless of the ';real'; market price of Lobster, guess they call the difference ';profits';.

But I do visit the Oyster Bar in the Palace Station and get their ';Lobster Pan Roast'; which is quite good.

Thanks All, appreciate all of the responses!!!

We have used this website to stay at several timeshare units in Florida. (we planned one complete trip staying at timeshare referrrals when we were seriously considering buying on)

    The rates are great!

    tahitti village

There are quite a few companies out there that have assorted plans to get you free or cheap stays at resorts, in exchange for doing a presentation. Check out timesharefreebies.com for specifics on a few of them, and how to get the most from them.

Most of these places, unfortunately, will try to sell you a plan involving other stays at other resorts. If you only want Vegas you%26#39;ll have to stick to your guns, repeatedly say no, be prepared to move on. Just like at the presentation itself. Also, I believe you%26#39;ll need to pay a fee to these people, make sure you go in with a clear figure of what you will be willing to pay.

The places in Vegas will probably not be on the Strip. Tahiti Village and Wyndham Resort are a short cab or bus ride away. An important consideration if you don%26#39;t have a car. Another consideration: if you have to pay for airfare, package deals make your hotel stay a lot less expensive, and with those you have a much greater choice of hotels, on the Strip.

Thanks so much for the information. You were very helpful.

  • going through customs at McCarin

I have just found out I will be going through customs once I arive in Vegas. I am wondering if this is usually a lengthy process as I normally go through when I depart here in Edmonton? I am also wondering how one would book a limo knowing that customs can take up to an hour depending on how busy it is and this would eat up all my travel time if the limo arrives when my plane lands?

    going through customs at McCarin

It%26#39;s immigration rather than customs that can be time consuming for visitors.

Limo companies deal with this sort of thing regularly and I%26#39;m sure they factor in potential time spent in immigration. You should call and ask how they work this.

    going through customs at McCarin

My first time through customs at McCarren just last week. It%26#39;s slow. As a matter of fact, they wouldn%26#39;t let us deplane as we pulled up just as another plane from Phillipines arrived and they only allow one plane to disembark and enter customs at a time.

Then when we got out of there no taxis and long line up for cabs. Definitely good idea to have the limo prebooked.

ABOil, can you tell me how you found out you will have to go through customs in Vegas instead of Fort Saskatchewan? We fly from Toronot and have never had to go through customs and immigaration in Vegas it has always been done at Pearson Airport in Toronto. Will you still have to go through it in Fort Saskatchewan and then in Vegas or have they removed the US customs/immigration personel at your airport? We leave in a few weeks and would like to know what to expect and how to find out. Thanks

dmartoakville Canada, I fly out of Edmonton with a layover in Victoria BC, then to Vegas. I found out that Victoria%26#39;s airport does not have a US customes office since it is a smaller airport. I therefore have to go through in Vegas as they will not let us go through in Edmonton because we have a lay over in Canada. I wish we could just do it before we leave but whatcha you gunna do?

ignore the last comment, you could get in serious trouble by doing that, bribing an immigration official.

If it was a joke then its not funny as people will take the advice of posters on here and will not think of the consequences.

Have any other Canadians/non-us citizens gone through customs in Vegas?

    How much will we need?

My husband and I are thinking of visiting LV over the easter holiday, we will be coming for 4 days from the uk, how much spending money would we need? Taking into account food, acitivities, drinks. Thanks everyone for your help.

    How much will we need?

well that%26#39;s pretty subjective. If you%26#39;re a low roller you could get away with $500 in cash, but the sky is the limit.

    How much will we need?

Me and my wife are in vegas this november for our first visit,Plan to play the slots a bit,eat well and drink a bit along the way,we plan to take $1,500 for 4 days,

    Darren

    How much do you have?

4 days you could do for as little as $200; one big buffet a day, minimal gambling, no shows, etc. But what kind of vacation is that?!?

You can spend as much as you can comfortably afford; how much you ';need'; depends on how much gambling you%26#39;re willing to do and at what stakes, how many shows you want to see, how fancy you want to eat and drink, etc...

But, you asked for a number so I%26#39;d say that with average amounts of all of the above, $1,500 should be good.

We are going next month and plan on bring the credit card for meals, already have show tickets, and for 4 nights about 1000 in cash for gambling and tipping.

Well this is all last min, so Im not sure how much we will have, but we shouldnt be spending too much on the gambling, we want to eat well, have a few drinks, and maybe see a show or something like that.

Thanks for your help so far x

It is so hard to give you an answer. Food can cost anywhere from $10 a person all the way to several hundred dollars per person per meal. You can get drinks free if you are gambling and some places have beer and margaritas for 99 cents. But you can also spend over $20 for a drink- depending on where you are drinking. Show can be free (Big Elvis) at Bills or you can spend a couple of hundred dollars on a ticket. Same with attractions- free, cheap or expensive.

I think you are going about this all wrong. Decide how much you want to spend on the trip per person. Divide that by four. Then decide how much you want to spend on meals, drinks, shows, etc.per day. People then would be able to give you more suggestions. If you don%26#39;t mind spending $100 per person for a dinner people could give you some restauramts to try. If you only wanted to spend $30- the list would be different.

I agree with vp03 - decide how much you%26#39;re willing to part with and make that work. It%26#39;s different for every Vegas visitor and there are certainly food options that fit in every budget. For gambling, only you can decide how much you%26#39;re willing to lose.

    how much you got?

I take about $100.00 a day for slots (I play pennies in the evening).

If I play craps I bring a decent bankroll.

Food varies, I eat mainly at the diners.

Bring eniough for tips for housekeeping($5 a day), drinks($1 a drink), dining, bellhop etc.

Good thinking, Pook. We forgot about the tips and transportation costs. Cabs? Monorail? Deuce? Where are you staying?

    Very Basic TR March 20-25

Here is my very basic trip report for our stay March 20-25, 2009.

My husband, a friend, and I flew direct from PHL to LAS on USAir. Our flight was delayed about an hour. Other than the delay, there were no problems. It was a smooth flight all the way to Vegas.

We landed at the airport and played a slot machine. We won $60 so decided to hire a car instead of a cab. In hindsight, this was a waste of money.

We arrived at Harrah’s and after a brief wait, we checked in. My husband had five comped nights. I guess this is from his Atlantic City play. Our friend was comped four free nights and one night for $50 at the Imperial Palace so he decided to stay there. I received three comped nights at Harrah’s and used them for a friend who joined out trip on Sunday. So all in all, we were staying on HET’s tab and only had to pay for our flights, about $260 rt.

We were assigned Mardi Gras Tower 1023. It overlooked Carnival Court and the pool. Very close to the elevators. There was some noise from the elevators in the daytime. There were reports of the court being noisy. I did not hear noise unless I opened the slider. Now, we also did not return to our rooms ‘til way after the bands finished in the Court! Hey, it’s Vegas, baby! I would definitely suggest this room.

The room was small. We had a king bed, a small table with two chairs, and an EXTREMELY small closet area. The rod to hang clothes was only 2 feet long. Since we were here for several nights, this was a bit of an inconvenience. The bathroom was clean. There was sufficient room for all my “stuff”, as my husband calls it, to fit on the vanity. The tub/shower was your standard size. The shower curtain was very dark and not too much light was let in while showering. There was a flatscreen TV.

After evaluating the room, my husband was not too satisfied. He also had some work to do, yes, even in Vegas, and there was no desk area for the laptop. He called and they said there was a bigger room available in the Carnival Tower but not until Saturday. He said ok, we will look at it then. And fyi, broadband service is $12 a day. I think that is ridiculous! There is free wifi in the rooms on the top two floors of the Carnival Tower according to the front desk person.

We checked out a room in the Carnival Tower on the 28th floor. The window also overlooked the pool area and a bit of the Strip. It was only slightly bigger than the room we were already in and there still was no desk. We decided to stay put. I am glad because I really enjoyed my teenie, tiny balcony every day. And I didn’t have to re-pack all my “stuff”!

So we unpacked, stepped out on our small balcony and checked out the view. We could see mountains to our left and the top of Caesar’s to our right. The pool was below. I liked the balcony; you could step out to judge the weather for the day. Coincidentally, our friend at IP was right across from us. He did the $20 trick and was upgraded to the king suite. It ended up that it was the Love Tub room. Too funny!!!! Especially since he is a single guy! He was not too fond of showering in the middle of his bedroom but he made do! Be advised, there are mirrors over the bed and on the ceiling in the shower! I thought the room was true Vegas fashion!

So we decided to head out for the late afternoon and night. I had a plan to see as much as we could possibly see in the short amount of time we were there.

I won’t bore you with the exact details but here is what we managed to see during our trip. It is in a bit of random order, some parts are still fuzzy, so bear with me.

    Carnival Court

    The Road House

    O’Sheas

    Bill’s

    Bellagio Fountains

Planet Hollywood…best voucher package of all casinos

    YoLos Mexican Rest in PH….delish!

    PH casino

    Harrah’s Casino

    MGM

    NYNY

Nine Fine Irishmen Pub …menu said $6 for Miller Lite bottle, charged 6.50, questioned it, and the bartender just said oh well. Left after that! Good guy singing though!

Freemont Street and all the casinos

Golden Nugget pool area is cool!

Stopped at a bar on the way to the bus stop, great southern rock band playing.

    Venetian

    Mirage

    Mirage Buffet

Secret Garden….nice to see the dolphins and tigers but the cost is a little high for the size of the gardens.

    Mirage Volcano

Freemont Street again….friends came in on Sunday. Getting married by Elvis on Monday…so we met up with them. Wished we did not go on Saturday and just waited until Sunday…not thinking!!

    Harrah’s casino

    Lunch at Toby Keith’s

    Wedding hosted by Elvis….great time!

    Harrah’s casino

    Harrah’s buffet….cool desserts…snow cones and cotton candy!

    Caesar’s Shops and Atlantis show

Treasure Island Pirate Show….cancelled due to high winds…nice ship, looks like it would be a fun show

    Bette Midler Show….Fab-u-lous! She rocks!

    Bellagio Fountains again….love them!!!!

Bellagio casino…can not be rated unless playing $25 a hand blackjack….ridiculous!

Harrah’s Casino for the final time!

    Exhausted!!!!!

Check out went smoothly. We hired a cab to go to the airport. We got to the airport in ten minutes and $20 including tip (there were three of us)! We checked our bags and realized our plane was on a delay…again! Another extra hour to wait. We played a slot but no cha-ching at all! We boarded the plane and headed home. This flight was a lot more bumpy! So much so that we did not get our second drink service. We finally landed in Philly, gathered our bags after a long hike to the bag claim area, and hopped the bus to our car. Long term parking was $66.

Found the car and headed out. Make a quick stop at Pat’s Steaks, ate some great cheese steaks around midnight, jumped back in the car and drove the last two hours home. You must, must, must stop for a cheese steak every time you are in Philadelphia…no matter the time of day or night!

And that just about sums it up. I liked Vegas. I wish we had pool time but the weather just did not cooperate. It was cold and windy. As far at the gambling goes, I enjoy Atlantic City better. The odds are better on most blackjack tables. The comps program also seems to be much more generous in AC. At check out, my husband and I only had $29 in combined comps. That was earned for five days of craps, blackjack, three card poker, and slot play. We were expecting a bit more.

I, and my group, will return to Vegas. We will do less sightseeing, more pool time, and less gambling because it really doesn’t pay enough in comps.

Sorry this is so long and I hope you were not bored to death! If you have any questions, please ask!

    Very Basic TR March 20-25

Great read. What voucher package at Planet Hollywood are you referring to? And how did you like the Mirage buffet?

    Very Basic TR March 20-25

    Good TR thanks for sharing.

Hi - thanks for the report. What toiletries do you get in the room at Harrah%26#39;s? Is it just no brand generic stuff?

Nice trip report. Thanks for sharing.

I should have said coupon book! Sorry. It had a bunch of 2-4-1 drink coupons and discounted food options. Best one we saw while we were there.

As far as the toiletries, I never use them. They appeared to be generic. I did not take them home or I would give you the exact name.

    Hope that helps.

    Kathleen

The Mirage Buffet was ok. There is a lot of walking required to fetch your food! It is really spaced out along the three walls. The most interesting part was the salad bar section. You choose your ingredients and a server will mix and toss your salad and then give it to you in a bowl. I guess they go by the premise that ';it always tastes better when someone else makes it for you';.

thanks Kathleen. That answers my question. If they are no recognisable brand I will bring my own.
