My daughter and myself are going to Vegas for a week on April 11. I want to show her the ';old Las Vegas'; downtown. We would like to go for a dinner buffet, play some slots and see Freemont Street show. We would be taking the deuce or a free shuttle there and back. Are the buses, etc safe? What about walking around some of the old souvenirs shops in the evening? After reading some of the posts here about bringing guns and knives for self protection I get a little worried.
Is downtown safe in the evening for 2 women?
Fremont street itself is quite safe in the evenings. I would have no problem with, for instance, my wife and daughter going there to spend the evening.
Venturing off of fremont street, not so sure. I%26#39;ve wwalked around there alone many times at night, and felt reasonably safe, but that feeling diminishes a bet the farther away from the the canopy you go.
The transit center is a couple of blocks off of freemont. Fine during the day. Not sure about at night though.
Maybe consider taking a bus down there, then a quick cab ride back to the strip when your time is done?
Is downtown safe in the evening for 2 women?
Yes, downtown is perfectly safe for two women in the evening. In fact-it has always been perfectly safe for this woman (me) in the evening all by herself! Use common sense- as you would wherever you are.
I am not a fan of the Deuce but that is because it is slow and crowded- not because of safety (plus -I always have a car). The Deuce is also perfectly safe. Guns? Knives?- forget about what you have read. I have been on the strip, off strip and downtown at all hours of the day and night (alone) and nothing bad has ever happened to me- nothing!
Fremont Street under the ';magic canopy'; is as safe as the Strip. The Deuce bus is safe also. No need to take a cab back, the bus stop may look a little shady but there will be plenty of other tourists waiting with you.
As long as you don%26#39;t go wandering off down side streets without knowing where you%26#39;re going, you should be fine. Just keep your hand on your pocketbook if you are standing in a crowd gazing up at the light show - that%26#39;s the one time when you%26#39;re easy prey for a pickpocket.
A girlfriend and I went to downtown alone a few trips back with no problem. The buses are safe and you will not be alone on the trip down there. We opted to cab it back as I don%26#39;t like the location of the bus stop for getting back to the Strip - it%26#39;s off the beaten, well lit path. Downtown isn%26#39;t as dangerous as some make it sound. Just be smart, stay to well traveled areas, and use common sense. Don%26#39;t make yourself a target. This holds just as true on the Strip or in the hotel you%26#39;re staying in.
Oh yes, my bff and I run around all over downtown!!! It%26#39;s well lit (under the canopy) but even off the FSE I still feel pretty safe! We have never felt scared (well no more than on the strip).
You will see more security Downtown then on the strip. They are very aggressive with the homeless there. You will be fine.
I took my 75 year old Mom last year and stayed at the El Cortez and she walked all over alone, no problems.
Thanks everyone. I was basically thinking the same thing. It was the comments about the guns and knives that made me think twice. I think we%26#39;ll get there earlier in the afternoon to do some shopping or browsing so we don%26#39;t have to stay as late. As most 22yr olds my daughter thinks she%26#39;s invincible, I no longer think that way lol.
I stay downtown about 80% of the time and wonder all over the place alone at all hours and never had an inclination of a problem. I did take the bus only once and it was a very slow trip but would do it again if I didn%26#39;t have a car. There%26#39;s always a ton of people waiting at the bus stop at night waiting to get back to the strip. If I remember right, it%26#39;s right next to Neonopolis and Hennesseys%26#39; Bar and Grill.
Don%26#39;t hesitate to visit downtown and have fun. For a buffet, definately recommend the Fremont or MSS buffet. Have Fun!
Go late afternoon, have a nice dinner somewhere and then enjoy the canapy show, gamble, spray paint guy, drink, see the different casinos( easier to do than on the strip)- spend a couple of hours there- at least. You do not have to worry and head back to the strip early.
Iha have never had trouble anywhere downtown even far from the canopy.
