Las Vegas

Hi

I was wondering if anyone can give advise on hotels - we are a family staying in Vegas. We will be there for 4 nights 2A %26amp; 2 C aged 16 and 12 years.

we haven%26#39;t booked the accommodation yet, but i am hoping to do so in the next week or so. we will be in Vegas around May 6th 2009.

I am looking at the MGM Signature, NY NY or Luxor Hotel. Are any of these good and does NY NY have a roller coaster?

Any advice would be really helpful.

Thanks

Las Vegas

Of the three hotels you mention it%26#39;s difficult to make comparisons beacause Signature is in a different league to either Luxor or NYNY. It%26#39;s a way superior property in every category. Some people wouldn%26#39;t recommend it for a first visit to Vegas because it%26#39;s a little detached from the main action of the MGM Grand casino but with kids I think it would be great. Luxor and NYNY both market themselves as party hangouts for twentysomethings and aren%26#39;t especially family friendly. NYNY does has a rollercoaster but you don%26#39;t have to be a guest to check it out.

As May will be great pool weather you would have access to the awesome MGM Grand pool area as well as the Sig%26#39;s own smaller pool. Your other two options have pools that aren%26#39;t so great.

There may be other possibilities for you - it%26#39;s a little difficult without knowing how much per night you%26#39;re happy to spend, but Signature could most definitely work.

You could stay at MGM (not Signature).

Didi, out of those hotels you listed, the MGM Signature is the best one. I have stayed at all three (NYNY during Opening Weekend way back in the last century *lol* , Luxor in a Pyramid Deluxe room in November of 2007, and MGM Signature just last weekend the 12th to 16th of March), and I can confidently recommend the Signature as a great place to stay, especially for families. Each suite and junior suite has a big bathroom, jacuzzi tubs, two high definition televisions, separate showers, separate toilets, and a kitchen or kitchenette. Also there is a sofa bed also, so a family of four could fit in a junior suite there. Its location is not really a deterrent, as a 5-8 minute walk in an indoor walkway with people mover will get you into the MGM Grand resort, and if you stay in Tower 3, the Strip is just a short walk away also. Luxor is changing its Egyptian theme to make it more of a palatable destination to the hip crowd, and NYNY is also slowly losing its New York theme for the same cause. The rooms are smaller (and in Luxor%26#39;s case, darker) in the NYNY and Luxor than Signature%26#39;s, so it may not suit the size of your family.

As for the roller coaster, yes, NYNY has the famous Manhattan Express. For more thrill rides at a better value, Sahara hotel has SPEED the roller coaster ( has to do more with NASCAR racing than the Keanu Reeves film *l*) and the Stratopshere tower has a couple of rides up there some 1700 feet or so above the Las Vegas Strip. Good fun for everyone in those rides. Hope that helps, and please do PM me if you have any other questions regarding your accommodation choice.

Hi - although the Excalibur gets a bad rap around here occasionally, when we have been in Vegas with our teen-aged kids that is where we have stayed. It has an enormous circus type arcade that can occupy the kids hours and and some other attractions like the ';Tournament of Kings'; that might be fun for them. The pool is adequate, although not nearly as nice as some of the others around, although I believe it also lacks the ';scene'; that you may or may not want them to be a part of...

The Excal is just geared more toward families and we feel more comfortable there with kids in tow. It is next to Mandalay Bay%26#39;s Shark Exhibit and also right across the street from the roller coaster at NYNY - you might even get a room with a view if it! Make sure that you upgrade to the Widescreen rooms though - well worth it. Also, at their prices we have been able get a room for the kids and one for us - a bonus in my book!!!

The last poster made a good point there about Excalibur...if the prices are good, your kids and you can be in separate rooms next to each other..that would be cool. Oh yeah, I also would be in Vegas that weekend of May 8th to 10th. Hope our posts is making this decision easier for you thus far...

MGM best choice, agree with other posters on that one.

I must tell you though, my kids just went on the NYNY roller coaster this weekend because we had friends in town with kids, and they wanted to go. My daughter is still complaining that her back and neck hurt. She said for some reason, it seemed to give much more of a jolt this time, than the previous time they had ridden it.

hi to everyone and a big thank you for all the great responses.

After doing a little more research the MGM Grand have rooms with 2 queen size beds, as apposed to the Signature where there is the one king size bed and pull out sofa.

i have been quoted a 4 night stay at the MGM Grand for a double room for around $470 US dollars through Perfect Escapes. I thought this was a pretty good price. However, i was wondering whether it is cheaper to just book from the states (we are on the east coast for a couple of weeks before Vegas).

Do you think this is a good price seeing most of you live in the States?

Thanks again

Di

$470 isn%26#39;t a bad deal for four nights at MGM if a weekend is involved. If it%26#39;s midweek then you should find better. I would book directly with MGM rather than use a third party for greater flexibility. Check out the promotions on offer here:

If you book directly with the hotel keep checking the rates. If they come down you can call them and they%26#39;ll adjust your stay to the new lower rates, providing it%26#39;s not a promotion that specifically can%26#39;t be modified or refunded.

Thank you for your information.

You say that $469 isn%26#39;t bad if it is over the weekend at the MGM Grand. The dates are Wed through to Saturday. I looked on the smarter vegas website but couldn%26#39;t find anything better than this so far.

thanks again for your help.

Hi

The 1st 2 nights of your stay, The Hotel at Mandalay Bay has a good offer for a suite. If you wanted to split your stay it is a good opportunity to get a 2 room suite at a hotel with a great pool complex.
